Details:
Went looking for aurora tonight as astronomical twilight set in. Aurora was apparent as soon as I get set up along the Yellowstone River. Two bright bands paralleling each other ran across the sky from the NE to NW. Approximately 11pm MDT, tall light pillars began reaching high into the sky to almost overhead. This lasted for about 10 minutes before retreating, and afterwards I relocated to a hilltop nearby for a different vantage. Approx 12:40 the aurora once again greatly invigorated filling the two thirds of the sky with bright and naked eye visible red. Incredible rapid pulses and flashing (I have real-time video) was noted in different regions of the aurora just after maximum brightness. Possibly another substorm?
