Details:
A couple nights ago, I headed north of Flagstaff, Arizona, to try imaging the comet (12P/Pons-Brooks). I wasn't sure it was going to work due to bands of cirrus moving across the field. But the sky was otherwise dark and winds were calm, so I was hoping for something reasonable to work with. This image integrates 40 minutes of 30 second exposures starting with some twilight, periods of crossing semi-transparent clouds and ending with the comet finally diving into an opaque raft of cirrus.
It was interesting to see large swirled/knotted texture downstream in the ion tail and decent separation between ion tail, coma and dust tail. The tail extended 4.5° to the edge of my frame. In this cropped image, only 3.5° of the tail is visible. // 27 March 2024, 7:44-8:29PM MST (0244-0329UT) // Canon EOS R5, William Optics ZenithStar 61 II APO (360mm f/5.9) // 80 x 30 sec., ISO 1600 // PixInsight, Photoshop
