Details:
On Wednesday 7th February there was a spectacular volcanic sunset in Mutare with anticrepuscular rays visible in the antisolar direction a quarter of an hour after sundown followed by a twilight arch with crepuscular rays above the sunset point which persisted for another 20 minutes. This follows the reappearance 10 days ago of aerosols from the January 2022 eruption of the Hunga-Tonga volcano after an almost complete absence of more than a month. It is amazing that after more than two years there should still be sufficiently dense patchy concentrations of stratospheric aerosols to produce such pronounced optical effects. Camera: Hand-held Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS40 in sunset mode.
