Aurora seen from an airplane.
The flight was from Japan to Europe. Banned to fly over Russia, the flight was routed through Alaska and the Arctic. When I started to photograph the starry sky with the wing, I found some green light appeared in the photos. At first I wondered if it was a reflection of lights inside the airplane. But after I suppressed the reflection the green light still continued to spread out, and I realized that it was an aurora.
The red color of the wing was due to a periodic red strobe on the top of the airplane. I took a photo during the strobe was off, and I confirmed that the green light is a phenomenon in the sky farther away than the wing.
The aurora continued for more than an hour. In the end, it looked like a double curtain of red and green. It was my first experience of seeing the aurora. I'm lucky to be able to watch it while sitting on a warm airplane without having to travel to an area with extreme cold and in the polar night.
