Details:
I am a professional photojournalist for the HVG political and economic weekly newspaper and hvg.hu news site.
On Sunday afternoon I was in my apartment in Budapest, where I live in a 16-storey building in the city centre.
I was working quietly (archiving my weekly reportage photos) when the news started pouring in that it was aurora borealis "party time".
I've only had the lucky of seeing and photographing aurora from Hungary once before in my life: almost 20 years ago to the day, on 20 November 2003, when a G4-G5 geomagnetic storm hit the Earth after several X-class solar flares.
And today (5 November 2023) at 16:10 UTC, the miracle happened again!
I immediately dropped the mouse from my hand and gathered the necessary equipment as quickly as possible: camera, lenses, tripod, remote shutter button, red light headlamp, and ran up the 16th floor fire escape with a view to the north.
At first time there was only a faint aurora borealis, but then at 16.12 UTC all parts of the northern sky almost exploded.
And here is the result: the arrival of the CME on 5 November triggered by the aurora borealis over my beloved city of Budapest.
I think that the intensity of the aurora is well illustrated by the fact that these pictures were taken from practically the centre of Budapest, a place with the light pollution of a city with a population of almost two million.
The only 'cheat' is that they are not from the ground floor, but from the 16th floor, above street and other lights.
