Exactly 20 years ago today, we saw intense auroras. The appearance was most beautiful in the Lake Constance area, as a storm was approaching from the west and the sky was covered with clouds from the west. The sky remained clear for the longest time in eastern Switzerland. The auroras were visible for hours as an intense red color in the sky. An event of this intensity at low latitudes is likely to occur only a few times in 100 years. The extremely strong solar storm caused the highest possible kp value of 9. Here are three pictures that I took of Rossbüchel (above Rorschach). The images were exposed on 200 ISO negatives.
