Details:
A sailing ship appeared on the sea horizon of the Ragusa coast with a mirage: the inferior mirage.
The earth's curvature does not show the entire ship but only its masts. In fact, the photo was taken from the seafront of Marina di Ragusa (Sicily)at a height of about 9 meters and therefore the visible horizon was about 10 km.
Low objects placed over 10 km away from the observation point of the shot could not be visible because they were below the optical horizon, with the exception of the upper part of the Amerigo Vespucci and its trees that peeked out on the horizon line .
The atmospheric turbulence did not help to obtain a clear image of the ship. Layers of warm air, under layers of lower temperature air, have generated this lower mirage, in which the visible parts of the ship are flipped down.
The overturning made the ship's bowsprit appear like a great wide open mouth advancing towards the sea.
The sailing ship is not just any sailing ship but it is the "Amerigo Vespucci".
It is an Italian military school ship from 1931. It is the oldest military ship still active.
A legend: "Some sources report the anecdote of an alleged encounter in the Mediterranean in 1962 with the US aircraft carrier USS Independence which allegedly flashed with the beacon:" Who are you? ", Receiving as an answer:" Amerigo Vespucci training ship, Italian navy". The US ship would then have signaled: "You are the most beautiful ship in the world” "
