The accompanying spectacular time-lapse animation and images show the descending late afternoon Sun unexpectedly re-appearing through a narrow gap between moving low cloud and the rocky summit of Murahwa Mountain near Mutare. The animation was compiled from a sequence of 56 consecutive still images captured during three minutes and then post-processed to eliminate slight camera movement. The Sun exhibits a beautiful marbled appearance as its light is filtered by passing cloud. ‘Letterbox Sunset’ is a term I have coined to describe the situation where the Sun makes a brief and often colourful appearance through a barely wider narrow slot that opens between low cloud and the horizon while it is setting.
