I decided to post this because you mentioned the aurora only made it as far south as Nebraska. I caught the Sept 24 aurora from Burlington Kansas on my security camera. They like red light. It only appeared for about 15 minutes before midnight. I rushed out two miles to a dark site to get it with the DSLR but it was gone before I could get out there. When looking for a few good frames to upload I found a very strange object cruising through my night sky. The second shot is a still you can barely see the trail.
(I cannot upload the video) The website link is to the video I could not upload here.)
This is in actual time so whatever it was happened to be moving at a very, very fast speed, too fast I think for a skimming meteor which was also likely too dim for that. I can catch things on these cameras I cannot see naked eye. The downside is that they can leave a trail that is related to compression artifacts so I cannot always tell if meteors and the like are leaving an actual trail. This is most certainly not a satellite as the field of view is over 100 degrees and would have taken over a minute ever to trail the ISS across the screen.
