Details:
On the evening of September 18th, 2023, reports were coming in of aurora visibility in mid latitudes. So I headed out to see if I could catch them from northern Arizona. I set up at Wupatki National Monument for very dark skies and a low northern horizon (35.5° N). /// I was stunned by how bright the airglow was. It was visible naked eye as soft, layered gray bands toward the horizon. These showed up green on camera. They were so bright that they interfered with most of the red aurora that was visible. I started a time lapse and eventually caught a 2-3 minute swirl of distant red pillars that managed to punch through the airglow. That activity can be seen at the horizon, just left of center, in the armpit of Ursa Major. The lights of Page, Cameron and Tuba City flare along the horizon, left-to-right. They don't have a notable impact on dark sky observing, but did manage to add to difficulty capturing aurora in that area. /// Canon R5 with Tokina 16-28 mm lens at 16mm, ISO 6400, 15 sec., f/3.2. Ten images stacked in Starry Landscape Stacker to reduce noise. Four images that contained the brightest/detailed aurora segments were weighted for priority in the stack.
