Details:
Today's sunspots with Astrosolar film and ASI178MM on the C14 from the French Alps (Queyras, Paul Felenbok observatory at 2936m). The Earth is shown to scale. Image AR3403 shows the granulation at a resolution rarely seen with amateur telescopes. Image AR3405 illustrates the Wilson effect: the umbra is lower than the average solar surface and the penumbra filaments dip into it. On sunspots at the limb, filaments are visible on the far edge but not on the near edge, highlighting the umbra depression.
