A NOISE REDUCTION WORKAROUND? My previous post at https://spaceweathergallery2.com/indiv_upload.php?upload_id=195108 displayed very poorly with a lot of distracting ‘noise’ both in the thumbnail and page view. I have noticed this happening to many Gallery contributions and this is spoiling the appearance of a lot of images, particularly low light ones captured at high ISO ratings. I suspect there could be a problem with the way the site is rendering images which contain some latent background noise but not sufficient to be obvious in originals. This appears to get worse the more the image has been reduced in size. I am therefore resubmitting four versions of the ‘Jet Plane above Mercury Setting’ montage. 1.The ‘Star Spikes Pro’ enhanced montage from my previous post in which background noise has now been reduced using the ‘Despeckle’ filter in Adobe Photoshop Elements 15 (PSE). 2.The ‘Star Spikes Pro’ enhanced montage previously posted in which background noise was not reduced. 3.An unenhanced montage in which Mercury is barely visible and background noise has not been reduced. 4.An unenhanced montage in which background noise has been reduced using the ‘Despeckle’ filter in PSE. The benefit of using ‘Star Spikes Pro’ to improve the visibility of Mercury is obvious! Without that the image would have much less impact. The benefit of using the ‘Despeckle’ filter to reduce the amount of noise appearing in the Spaceweather gallery rendition of the first and last images remains to be seen in this trial! If there is a significant improvement, others may consider doing the same. This may enable images to be optimised in such a way that they display better in the Gallery. An additional advantage of despeckling is a significant reduction in file size.
