Details:
There was a short-lived decrease in the signal strength for a few of the VLF transmitters I monitor around 1321 UTC on 9 October. This appears to tally with the occurrence of the extremely bright flash from GRB221009A. I’m using an earth probe antenna, which response to the electric field in the earth-ionosphere waveguide. The high-energy emission from the event rapidly changed the properties of the ionosphere, leading to the signal decrease on paths exposed to the blast. Impressive for a source that seems to be about 2 billion light years away!
