Details:
The forecast arrival of the CH HSS with G2 conditions coinciding with our hours of darkness was too much of a temptation (I'd planned a quiet night in!) so I decided to head out for a night of aurora chasing. I checked various weather forecasts and decided that the Mackenzie basin looked to have the best chance of clear skies through the night so off I went leaving Christchurch mid-afternoon (3 hour trip to Twizel each way.) I checked various locations in the early evening and settled on this semi-sheltered spot to improve chances of a reflection. This photo was taken from the best period of activity of the night which lasted about 45 mins or so starting at 22:30 NZST. An interesting night overall, with the numbers higher than I'd seen for a long time but the corresponding auroral activity seemed to me to be lower than expected, particularly after the moon set just after 3am. Tucked myself away for a few hours kip as astro twilight began this morning - quite a long night! Still, more than happy to photograph a moonlit scene with the Southern Lights playing a prominent part of the photo - and these rays were visible to the naked eye to boot! Canon 6D Mk II, 40mm, f/2, 6s, ISO 1600. Single exposure processed in LR.
