Details:
After managing to image the Helix nebula recently, it occurred to me that the Summer months are ideal to observe a selection of colourful and interesting planetary nebulae. So here is a selection I have imaged over the last few years. All except the Helix were done with my 8" SCT. The Helix (NGC7293) was from indoors with my 80mm f/5 refractor. The mount systems are very simple, tracking alt-az mounts being used in all cases. Total exposure times were less than 15 minutes, the earlier ones much less, with individual subs less than 20 seconds. Tracking alt-az mounts do, of course create image rotation, but this is minor during the course of the individual sub exposure, and the stacking software takes care of the rotation between the subs. The camera is an integrating video camera, stacking done with Registax 5 or 6 or Deep Sky Stacker, and processing with GIMP.
