Details:
This early in Cycle 25, would not expect to see a large sunspot directly in the center of the disk, since most spots are still a few degrees N or S of the solar equator. But today AR 3081 appears dead center, even though it lies north of the solar equator. The reason is that the ecliptic is NOT exactly on the solar equator, but off by about five degrees, so right now, as the diagram from tilting sun illustrates, the north pole of the sun is tilted toward us, and the spot appears shifted toward the center of the disk accordingly. This of course will vary over the course of the year, so this is a useful app to download to make these daily diagrams for solar observers. In addition to AR 3081 in center, at top left new R 3082 is bright and growing on NE limb, and south of center, unstable AR 3078, source of my point flare yesterday, is still putting on a show.
