Details:
I had read about the recent solar coronal ejections and the anticipated auroral possibilities over the northern latitudes prior to taking off from Anchorage, Alaska tonight, but I had no idea what I was about to experience while flying over central Canada towards Chicago O’Hare.
As the sun was setting behind us and twilight was taking over the sky, auroral curtains were already visible to our north. It was twilight, and the auroras were already VISIBLE! At this point we were just north of South Caribou, British Columbia and the show was just starting. As darkness filled the sky, purple and violet auroras danced atop the green auroras below, and curtains rode atop curtains. We watched the display for over three hours, and we could still see the green auroral glow as far south as eastern Iowa. I’ve been flying for 30+ years and this was by far the most incredible display of the northern lights I’ve ever seen. Absolutely stunning.
