Details:
The James Webb Space telescope was detected at the L2 point from Calgary, Alberta, Canada on 2022-01-25UTC.
Dr Philip Langill, director of the University of Calgary Rothney Astrophysical Observatory used the 0.5 m f/1.0 Baker-Nunn Telescope on January 25, 2022 UTC to obtain 50 1-minute exposures of the expected position of the James Webb Space Telescope. 39 of these images were stacked with the appropriate shift by the team of David Balam, (DAO/NRC Canada) C E Spratt(retired) and D W E Green (CBAT) using their blinking and motion compensation routines and the JWST was detected on the resultant image, among the extended star images. This 39-minute equivalent exposure shows JWST at its center with G(Gaia) = 16.56 (+/- 0.07). Its motion vector at 05:13 UT was 100.6 arc seconds per hour at a Position Angle of 295 degrees. The coordinate grid on the image is FK5/J2000.
This report is submitted by Alan Clark, ex-co-director of the Rothney Observatory.
