Details:
The photo is of an Adélie penguin performing an “Ecstatic Vocalization” in front of a solar eclipse. The Ecstatic Vocalization is a special display that males perform to claim their territory and advertise their condition. The photo was taken at Cape Crozier, Antarctica, one of the largest Adélie penguin colonies in the world. Researchers from Point Blue Conservation Science and collaborators have been studying this colony for over 25 years (more information on the penguin research can be found at www.pointblue.org and www.penguinscience.com). While this penguin was posing nicely in front of the eclipse, another research project collected space weather measurements near McMurdo, South Pole, and other locations throughout Antarctica (https://antarcticsun.usap.gov/science/4693/). Research was conducted with funding from the National Science Foundation and support from the US Antarctic Program. Details: Photo taken 21:45 December 4, 2021 (NZT). Single exposure with Canon EOS 7D Mark II, EF 100-400 MM at 400mm. 1/1000 sec f/36 ISO 800.
