Details:
I was on top of the Jura mountains to watch the setting moon partially eclipsed above a sea of clouds. From this continental place the view is limited by some peaks 166km away and -0.9° below the local horizon. During winter time, high pressures keep the humidity down at home in the plain, but it's usually clear above the temperature inversion layer. I was not expecting much from the eclipse, as the moon was only in the penumbra when it set. However, it was a lucky day with dramatic atmospheric effects and extraordinary distortions. The "mushroom" view was obtained when the moon center was -1°32' below the horizon at 6h44m40s UT. The "official" moon set time from the planetarium software at this location was 6h40m37s... I got over 7 minutes of extra observing time before it vanished completely :) It was well worth the hike !
