As a summer night grows dark the first 3 stars you see over your head are Deneb, Vega, and Altair in the well-known asterism, the Summer Triangle. This photo dates back to early June when the Milky Way was still rising to prominence. The mountain is Gooseberry Mesa, 3.5 miles east of Hurricane, Utah. The local geography is such that the lower part of the mesa lies in the shadows of steep cliffs along the east edge of town while the upper part is lit from the town's lights. The long exposure does accentuate the difference in brightness between top and bottom, however. Labeled and unlabeled versions.
