Details:
On June 03, 2021 between 0142 to 0210 hrs MDT, we were treated to a very unexpected auroral display, with a kP around 2-3, an aurora at a latitude of 51 was very unexpected, and I have since done some research on why this may have occurred. The first reason was the Bz dipped South to -5 around an 1.5 hrs before the display exploded. The other explanation is the a massive crack opened in our magnetosphere by the so called Russell-McPherron effect, either way we enjoyed an auroral outburst usually reserved for a G2 event. As the substorm subsided an SAR arc formed on the western limb of the aurora band. I have attached a screenshot of the solar wind 1.5 hours before the outburst.
