Details:
Just arrived back in Alaska after too many years away (enjoying the Milky Way in the darkest pockets of the Colorado Plateau during solar minimum).
Logged onto Spaceweather.com, saw geomagnetic activity and threw the rental into Drive, headed north out of Juneau under Utah clear skies over Southeast Alaska. The Moon only helped as fill light, illuming snow covered peaks, and highlighting any moose that might stray into my path (only a black tail deer browsing the shoulder fortunately).
My trained eyed could barely see a faint green glow, and waiting patiently, the key to successful aurora hunting, I caught an outburst with even some slight pink edges that lasted under five minutes. A briefer, fainter dance an hour later and I was satisfied.
Best part of all: light jacket over t-shirt, no gloves, and images captured handheld with an iPhone 12 Pro Max. It's a whole new tech cycle for a waxing solar max (though the medium format film camera is arriving separately by post in hopes of an active fall aurora season!!!).
Thanks Spaceweather.com
See y'all under the Lights!
