Details:
What a night here in Utsjoki in the far north of Finnish Lapland! After a sunny spring day, the sky stayed clear and the temperature plummeted to -25°C / -13°F. Perfect weather to observe the northern lights! Before 10 PM local time, a faint band of Aurora appeared above the northern horizon. The camera revealed a lot of purple/red above the green. Around 11 PM, after Bz had been negative for a while, the band grew higher and brighter in the sky, which produced some really bright and fast Auroras for nearly 45 minutes. Even though all the solar wind parameters remained quite weak, there were some very well defined vertical beams in the Aurora, something we usually only see with high Kp values. But I guess so far north just under 70°N here in Utsjoki, anything is possible almost in any conditions! Now I can't wait to see what the rest of the week will be like!
