Details:
Last night, the Auroras were glowing red again. I noticed that this whole week, this has been mostly (if not exclusively) happening while Bz was positive, the solar wind really slow, but a higher than average proton density (in the 15-20 p/cm3 range). After that, Bz turned south and we all know what it means here in Utsjoki at 70°N: bright auroras! With temperatures hovering around the -10°C (14°F), the days are counted now when I can still play with reflections on the open water of the Teno River. Soon the river will freeze (it is already carrying quite a bit of ice while writing these lines the next morning!), and we will enjoy a few months of full-on winter!
