Details:
My frustration was slowly growing after the past few days of very active geomagnetic conditions while I was stuck under clouded night after clouded night. Tonight was the other way around: a perfectly clear sky, but very gloomy aurora forecasts. I decided to go out anyway, as after all, we have had so many surprises here in Utsjoki in the far north of Finnish Lapland. Not much was happening, until I noticed a sharp dip of Bz that would reach us around 1:30 AM local time. It took quite some time for the aurora to build up, first we had a Steve-like structure (thin green and purple strip stretching from East to West through the zenith - but I don't think it was Steve). Then as it usually does, this thin strip grew wider and developed into incredible auroras. A corona "exploded" overhead and continued blinking and displaying fast needles for several minutes! After this the aurora continued its activity above the calm waters of the Teno River, until twilight made its appearance again, and it was time for me to write these lines before heading to bed. What a fantastic and unexpected night, again, up here in Utsjoki!
