Now fading into the void, Comet NEOWISE has been a most welcome alternative to world events this summer. My preferred venue for dark sky imagery is the RC model airport a few miles north of my town of Cody Wyoming. Very dark location , with facilities.
So when the night came very calm, clear, and warm, I had to go for Comet NEOWISE once again . And was not disappointed. While the comet is at the very threshhold of naked eye visibility using averted vision, it still produces good photography.
And there sure have been a lot of other things in the night sky to embellish it... a constant stream on International Space Station passes in conjunction with the comet ; gobs of other satellites , too... it seems hard to take a comet photo without having at least one satellite trail in the frame. (Or a swarm of StarLinks ) Then there's the current Eta Aquarid meteors and early Perseid fireballs. SUndray aircraft, lightning in the distance, some very bright planets and galactic starclouds in the south make for a smorgasbord of nocturnal skyfare.
A sampler from last night's imagery , using an 11-16mm Tokina wide angle , an old manual Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 normal lens, and a Nikkor 70~210 ED-G zoom for standard tripod time exposures , all at ISO 6400. The model airport windsock was strobed in manually using 1/64 power, and I hang a solarpowered LED lamp to work under. With beer.
