Details:
Karen and I went out this morning, July 8, to observe and image Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3). It rose about 4am, but it was difficult to see it through the murky atmosphere. I found it using binoculars, with the comet having a bright nucleus/coma and an arcing tail. Soon thereafter it was high enough to be observed with the unaided eye. I took a sequence of images from 4:28-4:54am using my Canon 6D, Tamron Zoon set to 135mm, f/2.8, with 2 second exposures taken every 15 seconds at ISO-1250 to ISO-400. The first 2 images are the beginning and end points of the sequence. The 3rd image is a composite of four images separated by 4 minutes each. The stacking procedure retains the brightest pixel values across all images, with the morning twilight wiping out most of the tail from the earlier images when the comet was closer to the horizon. Lastly, is a movie of the full sequence. The movie is a conversion of .wmv to .gif. I can view it in QuickTime, but I am not sure if it will work in this application.
