Details:
This morning was my first opp to see and image this fine comet. Saharan dust and thick local smog were no match for this gem, as I picked it up in a 7 x 50 binocular at 4:40 am local time, 4.6 degrees above the horizon. Had a look in the 6-inch scope at 76 X, and was delighted with the detail in the inner tail and coma. Somewhat reminiscent of the Great Comet Tebbutt (C/1881 K). I prepped the camera gear and got these two images. Both are with a Canon Rebel XTi with an 85 mm NIKKOR lens @ f/4, 10-second, guided exposures at ISO 100 at 4:59 and 5:03 am respectively. NOW FOR THE WORD!: Many images are appearing on the internet and these pages of a bright comet standing out boldly against a bright twilight sky. Gorgeous images, but as misleading as they are beautiful. Most - if not all - of these stunners are stacked images of the comet combined with a nicely exposed twilight horizon. The casual peruser of these pages would be expecting to walk outside tomorrow morning and see a bright comet in bright twilight. I could NOT see the comet naked eye this morning (due to the smog and dust), and my two images actually give a good idea of what it looked like in the binocular. These are single image file pics, with just a bit of brightness, contrast and color work with a touch of cropping.
