What's the highest solar altitude you have observed noctilucent clouds at?
For me it was about -3.5°. In several displays throughout the past few years it turned out, that the value of -6° given in literature for the maximum solar altitude where it's possible to observe noctilucent clouds is not quite accurate. In very bright outbreaks they can be observed to about -3° solar altitude. If they move across the zenith towards the southern parts of the sky it is also possible they remain visible for longer than usual while in the northern and brighter half of the sky they already faded.
On June 21st, when there was a historic, extremely bright and widespread outbreak happening over central Europe, both was actually the case. They appeared together with a beautiful purple twilight and at the same time stretched all the way to about 10 degrees above the southern horizon.
Well and later, when it got darker, they were even visible above the terminator, too!
So who knows, if the noctilucent clouds get even stronger in the future, the boundaries may shift even further... So keep going out to observe and remember it's not always like they say in the textbook!
The first three images were taken on June 21st, 2019 while the last one was shot on July 14th, 2016 when I got to observe my second brightest display of now about a hundred displays in total.
