Details:
In the next two weeks, Venus sweeps quickly past slower moving Earth, retrograding into inferior conjunction in early June. It is now close enough to easily spot the crescent phase with hand held 7-10X binocs, but catch it early! You can see the phase best right at sunset, with a still blue sky. If you wait too late, it is setting, lower in the atmosphere, and aberration is worse. Also, it is so dazzling bright the crescent will be very hard to image clearly. To get this best smartphone shot yet of her, I used my Virtuoso Mak 90, 2X barlow, 12 mm Plossl, and iPhone 5s with Camera + ap at 1/1,000th second exposure. Check out Mercury joining Venus by week's end as well, and the Moon in the group early next week.
