The auroras put on a beautiful show from Nenana, Alaska on April 14, 2020 between midnight and 1 am (0800-0900 UTC). Gotta love it when the solar wind’s magnetic field BsubZ tips south & goes negative! It was a textbook magnetic connection and it’s almost like why monitor anything else? The resonance scattering magentas were exposing well too. The festive flags seen here run along a strong cable that connects the tripod sitting on the frozen Nenana River to a clock. Probably within the next couple/few weeks the river ice will start breaking up and when that tripod moves enough it will pull the cable and stop the clock. People have been betting on when the ice goes out for over a century. It’s known as the Nenana Ice Classic and last year several winners guessed the correct time to the second and split a few hundred thousand dollars in prize money! I was just happy to get such a well-defined & colorful aurora over it all.
