Details:
With the high solar wind speed in the forecast I was hoping to catch the Northern Lights overhead. Before I could head out I had to convince the kids to go to bed on time so I wouldn't miss the show early on in the evening. It took come convincing as they initially wanted to come along like they had the week before, but I bargained out a deal where they went to bed on time and I would come back with some nice shots. While on my way to a spot with a good scenery and enough darkness north of town I saw the temperature drop fast. By the time I parked my car it was -15C already and it was possibly going to be one of the last cold nights of the season. With a clear sky, the Northern Lights already visible and a hard snow cover greeting me I moved towards the swamp I had picked for the night. Pretty soon after setting up my camera the sky filled itself with a burst of Northern Lights, embracing both the Moon and Venus with green accents. In addition to the celestial objects being surrounded, the Big Dipper was caught in a constant stream of Northern Lights for hours providing the most fantastic foreground shapes. The kids were excited to see the results in the morning so I managed to keep my end of the bargain as well.
