I was intrigued by this sight as I have never seen them over Sydney Australia. I had thought they were a high latitude phenomenon. They were not very bright but definitely there. Also interested in the dark shadows.

The real mother-of-pearl clouds, or nacreous clouds, are a high latitude phenomenon indeed and are formed in stratospheric altitude. But common iridescent clouds, like these in the picture, can be observed in all places on earth. These mostly are of altocumulus or fractocumulus type in tropospheric levels.
