Details:
On April 24, 15:29 UT, Martine discovered this rare, nearly 180 degree rainbow from her balcony, above the center of Chamonix Mt Blanc. The arc pointed towards the N-S direction. The brilliant colors were in extreme contrast with the snowy mountains and the brownish tree slopes in the background. Due to the fog in the background (left), the rainbow colors in this direction were pale and in contrast to the brilliant colors in the foreground (right).
The lower whitish part of the rainbow extended all the way to the horizon. Thus, the sky outside of the rainbow shows its normal brightness or is darker, the sky inside is brighter because it is still part of the rainbow (lensing effect increasing the intensity of the light inside the rainbow).
