What was supposed to be an aurora chase of a 2 day G1-G2 storm, ended up, calling an extremely late CME or never show up CME due to unforeseen factors, unfortunalley missing us at all….As soon as I saw the flare on Wednesday morning, impatiently was waiting for updates to see if will be Earth directed or not. By evening, models showed will be a direct hit aiming straight for Earth and was time of big decisions….looked around first for weather forecast for the next 3-5 days and nothing was encouragement around Edmonton and related areas. Checked also the cleardarksky website and to my surprise the closest with mostly clear sky over the next couple days was Yellowknife. Instantly I booked, flight, hotel and rental car and off I went on Friday morning with a hidden hope that the CME will arrive earlier on the late hours of March 22nd or early morning of the March 23rd. To make a long story short, out of three nights chasing the lights around Yellowknife, the last one March 24th into the March 25th was an incredible experience and a memorable show. Despite the slow solar wind around 300 Km/sec, Kp=1-2 and the Interplanetary Magnetic Field component Bz being between -2.5 and above zero, the lights did not disappoint. The show started very early around 10pm with very colorful pillars and curtains and lately developing into large curtains and beautiful coronas overhead. I am not sure if it is because the spring equinox, but most of the night I got beautiful colors of, reds, pinks, purples, yellows and of course the most common green. So far this one was one of the best shows I witnessed in 2019. Here are few pictures (out of almost 10000 of them, I took with two cameras) from the very start of the show around 10pm …Please enjoy and feel free to share them…Imported and edited in LR.
