Comet 48P/Johnson was at perihelion in its 6.54 year orbit last August 12 when it was 186 million miles from the Sun and brightened to about magnitude 12. In these images 48P is 213 million miles from the Earth and has faded to magnitude 15.7 as it moves away from the Earth. 48P has a short broad tail above and to the right of the coma. The Gif is composed of 4 images each 300 seconds long showing 35 minutes in the life of Comet 48P. In this 35 minute Gif 48P moved 0.01 degrees across Earths Sky. The image is an average of five 300 second images stacked on the comet. The upper right inset is a single 300 second image of the comet.

I have no idea what happen to the Gif when I submitted it, not sure where the purple color came from or why a small pixel Gif looks like this. If you select the large funny looking Gif you will get the Gif as it should look.

Cheers, Mike Olason
