Details:
During the morning of 4th December the temperature in Mutare reached 37 degrees centigrade. In the afternoon it became cloudy with localized dry thunderstorms from which very little rain fell. For almost two hours there was almost continuous rumbling of thunder with numerous weak cloud-to-cloud and some stronger cloud-to-ground lightning. Whilst this was happening a layer of reddish brown smoke haze drifted towards the city from a bush fire in Mozambique to the east. Whilst recording this on video, a several kilometer long almost horizontal lightning discharge took place which traveled over the layer of smoke haze from a thundery outbreak in the west (RHS of animation) towards the source of the smoke in the east (LHS). Camera: Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ60 in sunset scene mode.
