Experience:
The auroras started at about 9:30pm. They weren't very strong at first. Just little bands that played across the sky. Once in a while they'd brighten up a bit and they reminded me of a jazz pianist, those green and purple columns dancing like keys on a piano. At about 11:10 pm I decided to go back inside as I wanted to enjoy them with my wife (Janeene) while looking out our hotel window. As soon as I came inside I took off my coat and was in the process of putting away the camera gear when Janeene leapt up and exclaimed "Steve! Look! Look! Look!" I had turned my back for less than a minute and they had exploded in bright greens and purples, the brightest I've ever seen. This intensity lasted all but a few minutes and it went back to a glowing haze that danced around the rest of the night. The camera was previously setup to take 5 second exposures, so the quickness of the lights is blurred in the first two photos.
