The most photographable auroras I’ve encountered this season dance over a mountain waterway south of Anchorage, Alaska on September 5, 2018 at 1:40 am. After a long, bright Alaskan summer I truly had forgotten how fun aurora hunting was! Thank goodness for coronal holes. FAQ ~ Frequently Asked Question ~ Did they really look like that? Truthfully, no, they were definitely not that bright & colorful to the human eye. But remember, humans were not built for night vision. I like to think this is what an owl sees at night, and that makes it more real to me. Or slap on a pair of NVGs (Night Vision Goggles) to enhance our low-light vision and it’s my understanding that the auroras & stars are as bright as can be. And, as the world is discovering, today’s cameras & lenses are just awesome at bringing dark things into the light.
