Michael,

That is a very nice Gif, did you do a little more green exposure or is the comet giving off that green glow in the entire image? What was the image field of view? If I might ask, is the Asi 1600 a CMOS sensor? I am always amazed at how clean your images are, mine are always very noisy, of course living next to Denver doesnt help and I am only using the old SBIG CCDOps software to clean up my images, but I dont think that I have ever seen any of your images look noisy. Very well done as always.

Whats the cluster in the lower right corner please?

Hello Dave The cluster is Tombaugh 5.
Dear Mike
Asi is a Cmos Cam. This GIF is an experiment. 17 LRGB images for an animation I did not do before. However, there was only one color separation. The result is just a beginning.
I do not know your software. I partly work on my images with about 15-20 years old software (Photoshop 7, Picture Windows Pro). Last I took Astro Art 6. You can do a lot with that.
Best Regards Michael

Michael,

Thank you for replying to my questions, I much appreciate your thoughts on cameras and software.

I have been looking at the ZWO Asi CMOS cameras but I was waiting to see how they performed in comet images. Your experiment with this GIF shows that CMOS technology may be ready to compete with CCDs. As I look at your images on the German Comet Group it looks like the camera does a pretty good job with faint comets as well. Of course, your experience has a lot to do with that. It looks like it is time to try a CMOS camera, I can use all the noise reduction that I can squeeze out of a camera.

The SBIG software is used to control SBIG cameras and it does some basic things like average images, dark subtract, flat field, smooth and noise reduction, old software that they quit updating a long time ago for image processing.

Cheers, Mike Olason
