Details:
This is a partial eclipse of the sun on August 11, 2018. The flat sun does not appear to be perfectly round, as the air is capable of refracting light. Sunlight, which passes through the atmosphere before reaching the earth, is bent slightly downward by the refraction of the atmosphere. The thicker the air layer through, the greater the curvature. The layer of air through which sunlight slants off the horizon is particularly thick, so the sun at sunset is especially affected by atmospheric refraction. Low clouds also give jupiter-like markings to the sun during periods of low activity.
