Flying from Dayton, OH to Charlotte, NC, we noticed this unusual single cloud formation. It definitely stood out among the other clouds. We were at a high altitude. Was it a cloud formation? Was it from an an explosion, reaching that high?

Looks like smoke from a fire. Saw something very much the same last week here in Texas. A fire just west of the city of Burnet, but from I-35 it looked like what this must have looked like from the ground.

I think this is the answer - pyrocumulus “fire clouds” - do a google image search.
