Details:
This GIF and image of Comet 38P/Stephan-Oterma were collected in smoky haze in the morning twilight. You can see the smoke drift through the GIF. The comet was moving past the background Galaxy NGC 1087 in the GIF. 38P was 218 million miles from Earth and magnitude 15.8. Comet 38P will reach perihelion in its 37.94 year orbit on November 10 this year when it will be 147 million miles from the Sun. 38P will make its close approach to the Earth on December 17 when it will be 71 million miles from Earth. The comet is predicted to reach about magnitude 9 in December. As usual select the large image to get a better resolution image. Cheers
