Details:
I was riding home one day and noticed the partial ring around the sun. When I got home, I took pictures with my iphone. The inside of the inner ring was dark gray. It circled the sun. I was wondering what was causing this.

The images are showing an ice crystal halo phenomenon. It is consisting of a circular ring around the sun, with a circumscribed halo tangent to it in its upper and lower sections. These have their origin in sunlight refracted in 60 degrees crystal refracting angles. Far below the sun, the rainbow-like halo is also caused by ice crystals with refracting angles of 90 degrees. These halo consists of the 46 degrees infralateral arc and the circumhorizontal arc. The halo display is typical for high sun elevations. Halos are quite often seen in high clouds such as cirrostratus and cirrus, just as in the pictures.
