Details:
The recent discussion about Steve has jogged my memory about an unusual observation on October 21 2003. A keen and experienced aurora observer, I drove into the Scottish countryside in the hope of observing the aurora anticipated that night. At the observing site, around 9pm, I saw something like nothing I'd seen before - to the naked eye a faint isolated beam in the north western sky (in the direction of corona borealis). No aurora was apparent to my eyes to the north. I was perplexed, but as I was photographing on slide film I had to wait to see the results. There it was, a reddish beam was recorded against a field of stars. Then known as a "proton beam", we now know it as Steve. This may be a very early record of Steve!
