Details:
Magnetometers around the globe continue to register geomagnetic unrest as Earth continues to feel the effects of a stream of fast flowing solar wind emanating from a large coronal hole in the Sun's atmosphere. However, it's not only the speed that's important, it's also the direction of the magnetic field embedded in the plasma that determines the severity of the geomagnetic response, as illustrated with reference to the NOAA data accompanying my magnetometer chart. Much of the unrest correlates with negative Bz, when the approaching field turns south.
