Details:
I managed to capture Venus only 5.56° from the Sun, thus deeply immersed in its glare. The planet was at inferior conjunction on Jan. 09 and will reach its maximum East elongation (46°) on Feb.17. Currently shining at mag=-3.9, Venus is still so close to the Sun that it remains in the field of view of Soho`s Lasco C3 coronograph. Attached is a 7-frame animation showing a minute fraction of its path in Rio`s western sky at 18:04 (UTC-2h). Note that it is inclined to the left, consistently with the 23° southern latitude of Rio. In addition, the relative position of the very bright object, some five degrees above and a bit to the right of the Sun, uniquely identifies it. Capturing Venus in the glare of the Sun was not an easy task due to very poor contrast. The following settings were used for the shots, taken with a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX300 camera: ISO 80, 1/2000 exp, f/6.3 and 90x zoom magnification.
