Even although the Kp never rose above number kp1 . I still managed to catch these amazing images ,before midnight on the 10 th It was still going strong right after midnight way into the early hours of the 11th. Aurora never fails to amaze me . Also the lights in the village of tromvik went out at midnight , the first time in years with out streetlights, so i grabbed some images while i had the chance . Hope the G1 storm arrives tonight as I’m ready and waiting .

What a difference a nice dark sky makes! :-) ... not just to the amount of contrast between the lights and the dark sky against which they are framed, but also the natural look of the snow - especially in photographs. Sadly, even in fairly small villages (like Tromvik), the snow for miles around is stained an orange colour by sodium lamp street lighting ... This is also particularly noticeable in Ersfjord, where much of the near end of the fjord comes out a nasty muddy colour.

I realise that this sort of lighting used to make perfect sense because sodium lighting used to provide more light for less power (and so was a lot cheaper to run), but with the new LED technology now available this is no longer the case. And Im sure that in those towns and villages that stand to benefit from Aurora tourism, it would make economic sense to switch to white light street lighting ... and thus vastly improve the consumer experience ... particularly photographers!
