Details:
During the afternoon of 28 September the heat and atmospheric haze of the previous few days was replaced by cooler weather with strong winds and approaching bands of low cloud. As the sun started to set behind one of these, a pronounced Kelvin Helmholtz instability started to develop. Two minutes later this briefly engulfed the setting sun like a breaking ocean wave. This was captured in a time-lapse sequence of 13 photographs taken at five second intervals as shown by the animation and three close-ups from near start and finish. The camera used was a hand-held Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ60 camera in sunset scene mode with up to x40 zoom magnification.
